MUCH OF OUR WORK HAS BEEN FOCUSED ON RETURNING STUDENTS TO SCHOOL, AND ALL OF OUR CENTRAL AVENUES ADMINISTRATORS HAVE BEEN ENGAGED FULL TIME PLUS IN THAT WORK AND AT THE SAME TIME WE HAVE MAINTAINED MANY OF THE INITIATIVES WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON AS PART OF OUR MULTIYEAR STRATEGIC PLAN. ULTIMATELY WE DO WANT TO TALK ABOUT HOW WE'RE GOING TO GET READY FOR 2021-22 NOW THAT WE DO HAVE MORE CAPACITY THAT PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO GET BACK INTO KIND OF A MORE OF A NORMAL, FOR LACK OF BETTER TERM, SET OF ROUTINES AND PROCEDURES. IN ADDITION WE WANT TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON THE OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT ACADEMY RECOVERY REQUIREMENT. OSPI IS THE ORGANIZATION MANAGING AND MONITORING THAT AND WE BELIEVE THAT THAT RECOVERY PLAN IS REALLY TIGHTLY ALIGNED AND CAN BE ALIGNED WITH OUR STRATEGIC PLAN. WE WILL TALK ABOUT THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF THAT PLAN AND HOW IT WORKS WITH OUR STRATEGIC EFFORTS. AND WE WANT TO WRAP UP TONIGHT BY GIVING YOU ON EXAMPLE OF WHAT STRATEGIC WORK CAN LOOK LIKE NEXT YEAR. WE WANT TO GO INTO DETAIL ON ONE OF THEM SO YOU COULD SEE HOW IT MIGHT PLAY OUT. AND EACH OF OUR STUDENTS IS GRADUATING AND THAT THEY'RE PREPARED TO GO OUT IN THE WORLD AND PREPARED FOR POST-SECONDARY CAREERS AND EDUCATION, THEY CAN BE CIVILLY ENGAGED, AND TO GET THEM TO THAT POINT WE NEED TO BE SURE THAT EVERY PART OF OUR ORGANIZATION IS TIGHTLY ALIGNED AND THAT'S THE GOAL OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN IS TO KEEP WORKING IN THAT DIRECTION. AS YOU RECALL, WE HAVE FIVE AREAS IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, ACADEMIC, SUCCESS, WELL BEING, AND EFFECT USE OF RESOURCES. SO, WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO NEXT IS GIVE YOU HAVE BRIEF UPDATES ON SOME OF THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING THIS YEAR IN SPITE OF COVID, IN FACT, IN SOME WAYS TO HELP US MOVE THROUGH COVID, AND SO, DIFFERENT ASSOCIATE AND SUPERINTENDENTS WILL SHARE HIGH [00:05:02] LEVEL UPDATES ON SOME WORK WE'RE DOING FOR THOSE INITIATIVES. FOR THE AREA OF ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND AS YOU COULD SEE ON THE LEFT WE HAVE A NUMBER OF INITIATIVES BUT THINGS WE HAVE INTENTIONALLY DONE THIS YEAR TO MAKE SURE WE'RE STAYING TIGHT WITH YOUR STRATEGIC PLAN BUT ALSO RECOGNIZE HERE IN A VERY UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT THIS YEAR. AS YOU MAY RECALL IN THE SUMMER AS WE WERE BEGINNING TO THINK WITH TRANSITIONING TO A DIFFERENT WAY OF INSTRUCTION. WE PREPARED OUR TEACHERS, WE DID TRAINING. AS WE WERE BUILDING THAT TRAINING OUR SEN PATROL OFFICE ADMINISTRATORS WERE DEVELOPING THAT THEY BUILT IN ELEMENTS IT HAVE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING. SHELTERED INSTRUCTION OBSERVATION PROTOCOL BUT THERE ARE OTHER STRATEGICS OF CULTURALLY RESPONSIBLE TEACHING INCLUDING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE ACKNOWLEDGES WHAT STUDENTS ARE BRINGING TO THE CLASSROOM HOW WE COMMUNICATE WITH STUDENTS AND THOSE WERE BUILT INTO THE TRAINING AS PART OF OUR PREPARATION FOR TEACHERS TO MOVE INTO A REMOTE ENVIRONMENT. WE MAINTAINED OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SWIFT CENTER, THE NATIONAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER THAT PROVIDES SUPPORT AREN'T BUILDING SYSTEMS SO YOU CAN MAKE SURE EVERY STUDENT IS INCLUDED IN A RICH ROBUST EXPERIENCE OF EDUCATION. IT WASN'T AS FULL AS EXTENSIVE AS WE INTENDED WHEN WE FIRST PARTNERED WITH THEM BUT WE DID CONTINUE TO WORK WITH OUR SCHOOLS AND THAT WILL SERVE YOU SEE AS WE MOVE FORWARD BECAUSE IT WAS ATTEMPT PLATE FOR HOW TO SCALE UP TO ALL OF HOUR SCHOOLS. WE BEGAN A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE TIES CENTER, IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON AND THAT ACTUALLY IS DOVE TAILING AND WILL DOVE TAIL NICELY WITH YOUR MTSS WITH THE SWIFT CENTER. WE'RE NOT HAVING THESE SEPARATE INITIATIVES. FINALLY, THE LAST COUPLE ARE COLLEGE CAREER READY BES DEPARTMENT HAS USED THIS YEAR REALLY TO SCOUR ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION TO BE THURE THEY'RE IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE LATHEST FRAMEWORKS. ADJUSTING COURSE DESCRIPTIONS. AND FINALLY, AS YOU MAY RECALL, AGAIN THIS IS UNIQUE TO COVID, BUT OUR INTENTIONALITY AROUND EARLY LEARNING ALLOWED US TO FOCUS ON OUR PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND TO MAKE SURE WE BROUGHT STUDENTS BACK AND THAT WAS OUR FIRST RETURN TO IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION. AGAIN, WASN'T SPECIFICALLY CALLED OUT WHEN WE DEVELOPED THE STRATEGIC PLAN BUT GIVEN OUR SITUATION MAKING SURE WE ATTENDED TO OUR EARLY LEARNERS WAS IMPORTANT. FOR OUR NEXT AREA, WELLBEING, MAT, IF YOU COULD SHARE HIGHLIGHT FOR WELL BEING. >> WE'VE HAD PROGRAM REVIEWS RECENTLY FOR OUR STUDENT SERVICES AND OUR EQUITY INCLUSION DEPARTMENTS, BUT CONSISTENT WITH OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, WE'VE BEEN WORKING TO EMBED SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN BOTH REMOTE AND HYBRID INSTRUCTION LEARNING. WE'VE REALLY, DID A LOT OF WORK THIS YEAR TO INCORPORATE PARENTS INTENTIONALLY INTO OUR SCHOOL EQUITY TEAMS AS PART OF THEIR ON GOING DEVELOPMENT. WE PROVIDES QUITE A BIT OF EQUITY RACIAL EQUITY TRAINING TO NOT ONLY ALL OF OUR ADMINISTRATORS BUT ALL OF OUR CERTIFICATED EDUCATORS. AND WHILE OUR SAFETY ELEMENT THAT WAS CALLED ON OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, WE DIDN'T ANTICIPATE COVID, WE HAD PRIMARILY SPENT A LOT OF ENERGY IN DEVELOPING A COVID-19 SAFETY PLAN THAT WOULD ALLOW US TO REOPEN OUR SCHOOLS. AND ALSO HAVE WORKED TO REINSTITUTE ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES, WE'LL BE STARTING WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT STARTING THIS WEEK. AND THEN IN COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, WE CONTINUE TO BUILD OUT OUR DEPARTMENT OF OPPORTUNITY EQUITY AND INCLUSION, HIRING FOUR FAMILY EQUITY AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT COORDINATORS WHO HAVE BEEN HELPING TO NOT ONLY SERVES AS LIAISONS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY BUT ENGAGE PARTNERSHIPS IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND THE ACADEMY FOR CREATING EXCELLENCE. ESTABLISHED A STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE THIS YEAR WHOSE VOICE HAS BEEN HELPFUL AS WE BROUGHT THAT INTO OUR STRATEGIC PLANNING [00:10:03] EFFORTS. I'M GOING TO JUST TALK GENERALLY ABOUT SOME SYSTEMS PIECES, WE'VE DONE A LOT OF WORK AROUND LOOKING AT THE SYSTEMS OF HR AND THE FUNCTIONS OF HR, DID A PROCESS MAPPING JOURNEY THAT WE'RE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF DOING. AND WHAT THAT DOES FOR US IS IT ALLOWS US TO STREAMLINE THE HIRING AND ON BOARDING PROCESSES AND THE REASON THAT'S IMPORTANT IS BECAUSE IT REALLY IMPACTS THE EXPERIENCE OF SOMEBODY WHOSE COMING INTO LAKE WASHINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT. SO, I'M EXCITED ABOUT THAT LEVEL OF WORK WHITE HOUSE IT REALLY HELPWISE ALIGNMENT AND IT HELPS US TO BE SMARTER AND REALLY LOOK TO BUILD UP OTHER AREAS THAT WE MAY HAVE BEEN VERY HEAVY IN TERMS OF HUMAN TOUCHING, SO, REALLY LOOKING TO AUTO MATE AND STREAMLINE THOSE PROCESSES. THAT THEN GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE MORE STRATEGIC IN THE PROGRAMS THAT COME THROUGH HR. AND SO THE ONE THAT WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IS THE STUDENT TEACHER PATHWAYS PROGRAM. AND WE LOOK AT THE STUDENT TEACHER PROGRAM AS WELL A FRONTLINE TO HIRING STUDENT TEACHERS WHO ARE WITH US FOR A FEW MONTHS, SOME OF THEM EVEN AS LONG AS A YEAR, THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN LAKE WASHINGTON LEARN ABOUT YOUR VALUES, WE'RE ABLE TO GET THEM INVOLVED IN PROGRAMS AND THEY ARE ON THE FIRST LINE OF HIRING. SO, EXCITED ABOUT THAT. WE HAVE 150 STUDENT TEACHERS THAT COME THROUGH OUR PROGRAM THROUGHOUT A YEAR, AND SO WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT A POOL THAT CERTAINLY A VERY ROBUST POOL OF NEW EXCITED TEACHERS WHO ARE EXPOSED TO US. WE'VE LOOKED AT EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES IN TERMS OF READYING OUR HIRING COMMITTEES. AND SO, REALLY, LOOKING AT BEST PRACTICES IN TERMS OF HIRING COMMITTEES, TOOLKIT THAT WORKS SPECIFICALLY WITH HIRING MANAGERS AND BUILDING AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS SO THAT THEY ARE WELL-VERSED IN PRACTICES THAT ARE BUILT AROUND INTEGRITY, DOING A LOT AROUND BIAS TRAINING AND REALLY ENSURING THAT WE HAVE A DIVERSIFIED HIRING GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO CAN THEN BE VERY INSTRUMENTAL IN GIVING APPROPRIATE FEEDBACK, EVIDENCE-BASED FEEDBACK TO ENSURE THAT WE HIRE THE BEST PERSON FOR THE POSITION OPEN. AND THE LAST THING I'LL SPEAK TO IS WE'VE ENGAGED WITH A NATIONAL RECRUITMENT FIRM AND THAT'S ABOUT BEING INTENTIONAL ABOUT DIVERSIFYING OUR POOL AND REALLY DOING DIFFERENT TYPES OF APPROACHES, VERY TARGETED WITH SPECIFIC GROUPS TO ENSURE THAT WE HAVE A POOL THAT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STUDENTS AND THE FAMILIES THAT ARE IN OUR DISTRICT. AND THEN, WE ALSO IMPLEMENTED THE FULL SUITE OF THE MICROSOFT TEAMS PLATFORM AND ACCESS FOR EVERYONE WITH THE HARDWARE REQUIRED AND THE WI-FI CONNECTIVITY AND IN THE BACK END, WE'VE UPDATED THE SERVERS FOR STORAGE AND TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND SECURITY BECAUSE THERE'S HEIGHTENED ACTIVITY IN THE CYBER CRIME AREA SO WE WORKED VERY HARD AT THAT. AND LASTLY, TO SUPPORT ALL OF OUR USERS, OUR USER BASE EXPANDED TO 30,000 HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES AND KIDS BECAUSE OF REMOTE LEARNING AND WE'VE EXPANDED OUR TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT TO RESPOND TO THAT. AS I WAS MENTIONING BEFORE, JUST GIVEN THE CAPACITY OF OUR SYSTEM TO ATTEND TO ALL THE THINGS THAT HAD TO HAPPEN AND THAT WERE CHANGING PRETTY MCH WEEKLY, WE HAVE A MUCH MORE ACCELERATED PROCESS BUT WE'RE MAINTAINING THE CORE ELEMENTS OF THAT STRATEGIC PROCESS. AS WE THINK ABOUT HOW WE'RE GOING TO ENGAGE IN STRATEGIC PLANNING WITH OUR ADMINISTRATORS AND OUR FAMILIES AND TEACHERS AND STUDENTS, WE ALWAYS WANT TO COME BACK TO AS I WAS SHARING AT THE BEGINNING THE IDEA THAT EVERY STUDENT NEEDS TO GRADUATE FUTURE READY. WE SEE THE MAJOR INITIATIVES AS WE MOVE INTO 2021-22 TO SUPPORT THAT WORK ARE AROUND OUR EFFORTS TO BUILD MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT. AND EMBEDDED INTO THAT OUR INCLUSIVE PRACTICES. WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH SCHOOLS AROUND MTSS, AND WE HAVE FOUND THAT THEY GET TO A POINT WHERE THEY SAY, OKAY, WE KNOW WHAT WE NEED TO WORK ON AND THE NEXT STEP IS HOW DO WE DO THAT AND THAT'S WHERE THE WHY HAD OF INCLUSIVE PRACTICES COMES IN HOW DOES EVERY KID GETS WHAT THEY NEED AND BE A MEMBER OF THEIR COMMUNITY AND ALL OF THAT IS GROUNDED IN OUR EQUITY WORK THAT WE MAKE SURE THAT EACH PERSON GETS WHAT THEY NEED AND EACH PERSON NEEDS UNIQUE THINGS. AS WE BEGIN OUR PLANNING EFFORTS, WE REALLY, ANYTIME YOU DO STRATEGIC PLANNING YOU ARE REALLY THINKING ABOUT HOW TO USE THE TIME AND PEOPLE AND THE BUDGET CAPACITY THAT YOU HAVE IN OUR SYSTEM AND THERE'S NOT, AS YOU ALL KNOW NOT AN INFINITE AMOUNT OF TIME AND THAT PEOPLE, WE HAVE TO HAVE SKILLS AND PRACTICES DEVELOPED IN OUR FOLKS AND WE HAVE SO MUCH BUDGET. YOU MAY RECALL THIS PROCESS AS WELL, AS WE THINK ABOUT OUR STRATEGIC PLANNING EVEN UNDER A RELATIVELY TIGHT TIMELINE, WE WANT TO THINK ABOUT A PROCESS THAT WE USE THAT'S CYCLICAL, WHAT ARE OUR DESIRED OUTCOMES AND WAY DATA WILL WE USE, NOT ONLY IS THIS PART OF OUR STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS BUT I'LL REFER TO THIS IN OUR RECOVERY PLANNING PROCESS. AND THEN 2019-20 WE STARTED A PILOT PROCESS WHERE WE PROVIDED IT SUPPORT TEAM TOSS ANALYZE THEIR SCHOOL AND BUILD OVER TIME THAT ARE MORE COMPREHENSIVE MTSS FRAMEWORK. AS WE MOVE IN 2021-22 WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT IS THE IDEA THAT ALL SCHOOLS WOULD USE THAT SWIFT OR MTSS FRAMEWORK TO ANALYZE THEIR SCHOOL, IDENTIFY AREAS OF MTSS THAT THEY NEED TO DEVELOP AND DEVELOP A PLAN TO BUILD THAT MTSS OUT OVER YEARS AND TO HAVE DISTRICT SUPPORT TO DO THAT. AND SO WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THAT AND WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE, WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THE SWIFT EDUCATION CENTER, WE WORKED WITH A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS WHERE THEY DID THAT ANALYSIS SO IT'S AN ASSESSMENT OF YOUR SCHOOL YOU LOOK AT MULTIPLE DOMAINS NEEDED TO SUPPORT OVERALL INCLUSION FOR STUDENTS. ALSO, HAVING DISTRICT SUPPORT TO MAKE SURE THAT'S WORKING WELL. AND SO, BEFORE COVID, WE HAD A DISTRICT IMPLEMENTATION LEADERSHIP TEAM THAT WE WILL BE BRINGING BACK TOGETHER THAT REALLY IS WORKING AT MONITORING HOW MTSS IS BEING IMPLEMENTED ACROSS THE DISTRICT AND SERVES AS A LIAISON BETWEEN SCHOOLS AND THE DISTRICT CABINET TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE PROBLEM SOLVING AND MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE RESOURCES TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR SCHOOLS. AND WHAT THAT ANALYSIS CONSISTS OF, IS SCHOOLS ASKING THEMSELVES A SERIES OF QUESTIONS IN MULTIPLE DOMAINS, THESE ARE THREE EXAMPLES FROM THREE DIFFERENT DOMAINS, FOR EXAMPLE, ACADEMI ACADEMIC SUPPORT. IS THERE UNIVERSAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR [00:40:03] POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION AND WHAT ARE THOSE SO THE TEAM RANK THEMSELVES AND GIVE A SCORE. UNIVERSAL BEHAVIOR AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORT SUNSHINE CLEARLY EVIDENT. FOR UNIVERSAL INSTRUCTION FOR ALL, IF YOU LOOK AT THE FIRST BULLET, NO STUDENT IS INTENTIONALLY PLACED ORE SENT TO ANOTHER SCHOOL DUE TO OUR LACK OF CAPACITY TO THEM. AS MORE SCHOOLS ANSWER NO TO THAT, THAT POINTS OUT A SYSTEM AREA FOR GROWTH AND THEN WE CAN START. SO, ONE WAY THAT WE COULD ACTUALIZE THIS FOR NEXT YEAR IS CONTINUING TO WORK WITH THE SWIFT CENTER, THEY PROVIDE CONSULTATION ON HOW TO MAKE SURE THAT SCHOOLS CONDUCT THAT ANALYSIS IN A VALID AND RELIABLE WAY AND WORKS WITH YOUR DISTRICT LEADERSHIP TEAM TO SUPPORT SCHOOLS AS THEY ARE IMPLEMENTING AN ACTION PLAN. THAT'S WHAT MTSS MAY LOOK LIKE ACROSS OUR WHOLE SYSTEM AND IF YOU BACKWARDS PLAN FROM THAT, I THINK ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THAT NEEDS TO GO INTO PLACE, THE TRAINING AND SUPPORT ONCE THEY START TO IDENTIFY AREAS OF GROWTH. FOR EXAMPLE, IF THEY SAY, WE REALLY NEED TO WORK ON HAVING GOOD DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT, AND HOW TO USE THAT, WE COULD PROVIDE THAT SUPPORT FOR THEM. ULTIMATELY ALL THOSE THINGS START TO COME TOGETHER AND WE HAVE THOSE CLEARLY IDENTIFIED BEFORE EVERYBODY WRAPS UP FOR THE SUMMER AND OUR CENTRAL OFFICE BEGINS TO PLAN SO WE COULD HIT THE GROUND RUNNING NOT ONLY IN THE FALL BUT EVEN AS EARLY IN THE SUMMER. FOR EXAMPLE, OUR GRADUATION RATE, WE DO HAVE GROUPS, FOR EXAMPLE OUR HISPANIC STUDENTS WHERE GRADUATION RATES SEEM TO BE DECLINING, THAT'S THAT'S AN SPECIFIC AREA WE NEED TO WORK ON. AND WHAT ARE THE INDICATORS WE USE NEXT YEAR TO MONITOR THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PLANS. EACH DEPARTMENT IS IDENTIFYING SPECIFIC STRATEGICS AND WE'RE LOOKING AT THE INDICATORS THAT THAT DEPARTMENT WILL HAVE FOR US TO MONITOR, FOR EXAMPLE IF I'M TALK TO GO JEN ROSE AND SHE HAS A PLAN ABOUT CURRICULUM ADOPTION OR HIGH QUALITY MATH INSTRUCTION. AND HOW ARE WE MONITORING THAT. AND OUR MTSS EFFORTS WE'LL HAVE VERY SPECIFIC IMPLEMENTATION MONITORING, FOR EXAMPLE, HAVE YOU EVEN COMPLETED THE ANALYSIS, AND IF YOU HAVE, THAT'S GREAT AND IF YOU HAVEN'T, WE NEED TO GO BACK ON THAT.
