There is renewed emphasis on high school curriculum coming from OSPI. Chris - our punishment for truancy is suspension? Has the criteria/definition changed? Ken - sometimes the wording is not exactly accurate and can exaggerate. Cannot speak specifically to incidents noted. Traci - these criteria are set by State, do they give a definition of a major injury? no. Board would like those definitions explained. Ken noted that we sometimes struggle to make our incidents match the State criteria. Nancy noted that suspensions are coming down. are there changes coming in the Becca Law (Nancy). Ken is unaware of any changes, although david Larson is in charge of attendance and truancy issues so they are working together on attendance policies. Traci believes there is some pending change at the State level regarding Becca Coordinators. She will do a BB when the info is available. Board would like more information on the 5 students suspended for truancy. Nancy - why don't all schools have the option for in-house suspension? Traci asked that Ken follow up with this question and report in the same BB as the Becca question. Nancy - looking for Ken's opinion if the reduction is suspensions is the kids behaving better or are schools doing a better job of intervention? Ken felt that principals are looking more deeply into why kids are in trouble and seeing how they can work with the student and/or family to change the behavior and help the student.
